Letterkenny Accommodation - Mount Errigal

Mount Errigal is situated in the north-west of Donegal between Dunlewy, Gweedore, Gortahork and Glenveagh. It's a most distinctive and exciting mountain standing at over 752 metres (2,467 ft). Errigal is the tallest peak of the Derryveagh Mountains in the Northwest of Ireland. It is also the most southern, steepest and highest of the mountain chain, called the 'Seven Sisters' by locals (Muckish, Crocknalaragagh, Aghla Beg, Ardloughnabrackbaddy, Aghla More, Mackoght (also known as 'little Errigal') and Errigal.

The spectacular quartzite cone summit forms an iconic Donegal and Irish image. The white appearance  of the mountain is a result of the extensive amounts of scree on the slopes. Errigal dominates the landscape and valley below. It provides a dramatic backdrop to the shallow peat valley, subdivided by low dry stone walls, which meander down to Dunlewey.

Mount Errigal is a reasonably tough but highly satisfying climb which is likely to take about 2.5 hours or so. There is an option of varying your return to take in the neighbouring summit of Mackoght (555m), which will probably add a further hour's walking. Errigal is steep and needs great care, particularly on descent, but the views are truly breathtaking on every side. Access to the uppermost peak is via a narrow goat track where the ground falls away sharply on either side. If you have a poor head for heights be content with the lower ridge. The summit ridge offers views over Glenveagh National Park, the Poison Glen, and on a clear day Tory Island, off the north west coast.
